DEVOPS 4 KEY METRICS

When the enterprise utilizes DevOps for its development, operations, and security functions, the key is to make the most of it. Given the increasing complexity and sophistication of technology, it is necessary for organizations to properly measure and track key metrics that define the effectiveness and efficiency of their DevOps activities.

Through Salesforce-focused release management, data backup and recovery, and security solutions, there are four primary key metrics businesses should pay attention to when working with DevOps processes: time-to-market, lead-time, throughput, and flow efficiency. Measuring each of these metrics will help the organization successfully identify improvements and observe issues and risks.

Time-to-Market

Time-to-market measures how quickly an organization is able to get their product or service to customers. This metric is all about how quickly the company can go from concept/ideation to launch. As startups often embrace DevOps to accelerate the pace of innovation, this metric is increasingly important.

Lead Time

Lead time measures how much time is needed to complete a task or process. It is the amount of time it will take for ideas and/or bugs to be identified, built, tested, deployed, etc. By calculating the total lead time, an organization can better understand the speed and effectiveness of their development, operations, and security processes.

Throughput

Throughput is often associated with a "number of items processed per unit of time" metric. It is used to measure the speed of output, or the completion of a certain number of tasks within a given period. Throughput is most often measured in units like stories, features, bugs, or tasks.

Flow Efficiency

Flow efficiency is a metric of system performance that measures the resources used (e.g., time, space, money) to move a task from the point of being introduced into the system to the point of completion. Flow efficiency is a very important metric as it can be used to identify areas where processes and operations could be improved or where bottlenecks are occurring.

Benefits of Measuring DevOps

By properly measuring and tracking the four primary key metrics associated with DevOps, organizations can effectively identify improvements as well as take corrective action to ensure they are efficiently operating. Collecting data helps provide a better understanding of the effectiveness of processes—not only of the development, operations, and security functions, but also of the entire organization as a whole. Not to mention, improved efficiency, performance, and customer satisfaction.

Salesforce release management, data backup/recovery, and security solutions are critical for an enterprise when utilizing DevOps. By measuring the four primary key metrics affiliated with DevOps—time-to-market, lead-time, throughput, and flow efficiency—enterprises can properly observe how they are functioning and make sure they are meeting their goals.
