IP RANGES IN SALESFORCE

The Salesforce Infrastructure is key for enterprise customers looking for release management, data backup and recovery, or indeed security solutions.

Securing the enterprise is critical and one of the primary concerns for Salesforce clients. An important element of security lies in controlling IP access. Without proper security at the IP level, any service or application could be vulnerable to attack. This is even more concerning with the increasing ubiquity of cloud computing, where a substantial number of applications are now hosted in the cloud.

Fortunately, Salesforce provides an IP range structure to help secure your enterprise system. IP ranges are used to restrict access to and from the Salesforce data centers to approved clients. This helps with preventing unauthorized access to applications and websites hosted by Salesforce.

Salesforce offers a number of different ranges of IP addresses to choose from. You can select from the broadest range, which covers a large area and includes all of Salesforce’s data centers, or you can select from smaller ranges regionalized within the specific regions that you operate in. The IP ranges are set at both the most granular (allowing access from specific addresses) and the most comprehensive (allowing access from large datasets).

The goal is to ensure that the access controls are tightly managed and meet your security criteria. Doing so is as simple as selecting the IP address ranges that you would like to exclude or include.

The IP address ranges provided by Salesforce are updated regularly, giving your system a layer of security that extends into the future. Because Salesforce's IP ranges span multiple regions across the globe, they also provide more ballistic security – which helps protect your system from distributed denial of service attacks.

You can easily configure the IP address ranges using the Salesforce user interface in your production environment, allowing you to ensure that only authorized users have access to your applications. A managed service may also be available, providing the service and expertise required for this task.

To review, Salesforce provides IP ranges which can be easily configured to restrict access to enterprise networks and applications. The IP ranges are regularly updated, and can provide excellent security in all environments. With the added ballistic security of distributed denial of service attacks, you can secure your systems with the maximum security available.
